If a Child reports abuse --- Do's and the Don'ts

If a Child tells you about possible abuse...

Do's

Take the child seriously
Stay calm and neutral
Tell the child s/he has been brave to tell you
Reassure the child that what has happened is not their fault
Reassure the child that  it is not unusual and has happened to lots of children
Be honest about your own role, who you will have to tell and why

Keep the child fully informed about what you are doing/what is happening

DON'Ts
Make promises you cannot keep
“Interrogate” the child
Cast doubt on what the child tells you
Speculate or make assumptions about what has happened
Approach/inform alleged abuser
Make the child feel responsible for the abuse
Communicate strong feelings such as anger, even about the alleged abuser
Panic. Acting too hastily can be counter productive

Protecting our Children in Pakistan

In 2010 when I joined an International non governmental organization, I had visions in my mind of working and supporting the cause of Children. Today after three years of understanding the cause and mission of this organization I have learnt a lot. I feel fully equipped to give training and making protection mechanisms. As a responsible citizen of this country, I strongly feel that we are lacking in this field.

In terms of Child protection, I feel there is a dire need to protect

our children from all sorts of abuse.

Following are the abuse categories from which all children need protection:
  • Physical Abuse
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Neglect or negligent treatment
Not only the children living in orphanages and child caring institutions need protection. Everyday our children need protection especially from close family members. Protection can be achieved by raising awareness and talking to the children. The children need to understand how they have to take care of themselves and whom they have to inform in case of being abused.

Looking forward to your support in spreading knowledge.
